Improvising interior lighting

People who have a lot of natural light flooding in their rooms are really the blessed one’s. But what about those people who do not have this situation going on in their rooms. This article is all about you people, who are figuring out how to increase and improvise the condition. You might need natural light to study a book, record a video, or even take that perfect click.

To allow more amount of natural light, you need to follow few simple rules. Firstly, understand the direction of light coming in and secondly the purpose for which that light will be used. If we need lighting for reading a book we might need it more than we need to sleep during the afternoon.

Let us dive into the topic. How can we increase or improvise the lighting in our room? The answer is simple and related to two basic architectural features any house will be having. Doors and windows are two bouncers which decide the amount of lighting entering our premises.

! A Door to lighten up your mood!

The idea to keep a door is to distinguish one room from another while keeping it private.  There are various types of doors to be used for variety of purposes. The common door which we use is the opaque wooden door in our rooms. But apart from these types we do have translucent or transparent window.

  1. Going transparent

This helps us to welcome more amount of lighting in places where windows can not be placed but there is an opening like balcony. These are complete glass panels. These can be either used with a single door fixture or can be used as folding or sliding door. This allow more amount of lighting into our houses.

  • Sun breakers

Sun breakers are type of louvres used on doors to break natural light to some extent. This makes sure that the perfect amount of lighting is present in the room. These during the night time act as perfect night lamp and we do not need to spend more amount of money. These were used in the past but have lost their magic. But as per me these serve as the best way to balance the light if you need your own privacy.

  • Translucent and decorative doors

These are doors are being used in various sectors to deck up houses even more. Doors with certain patterns or glass painted doors are being used in exterior. These doors allow the perfect amount of lighting making the room private and also allowing the light in proper proportions. They can also be used in offices or showrooms.

! Open a window to let light in!

Apart from allowing cross ventilation of natural air, windows also allow the maximum amount of light into our rooms.

  1. Size matters

Size of a window plays a major role in deciding the amount of light entering the interiors. To opt for more amount of lighting always suggest your architect to make a window larger to your sill level.  French windows can be the best way to add more décor as well as lighting. Lintel level windows can also be added in this category.

French widows since early history have been a major decorative as well as structural aspect of any building. These windows are extended and almost touch the flooring rather then starting from the sill level. These windows usually open towards balcony, terrace garden, or verandah. The main purpose of these windows is to allow ample amount of light in the area they are placed. They do not serve the purpose to maintain privacy within.

  • Go transparent

Full transparent glass paneled windows are the best way to solve the problem of dark room.  These windows are classy and elegant to look at and are used everywhere abroad to deck up their houses. Translucent windows can also be used in case we want our rooms to neither be too bright nor dark. Using a combination of these can. really play in our favor.

  • Using sun breakers

Sun breakers or louvres can be used in elevation or front façade to allow natural lighting as well as ventilation. These are used in various types of cities towns and villages in India.

  • Types of curtains

You might be thinking what if we already done with constructing the house and there is less amount of light still. Here the arrangement of curtains falls into picture. It’s necessary to understand the direction of lighting. In places where there is bright sunlight flooding into your room we might use a darker and thicker shades of curtains.

Whereas where we need more light we might use a lighter or translucent shade of curtain. This helps in maintaining the balance of lighting in the whole room.
